PMEF adds 10 new scholarships for 2021-2022

Thanks to our generous community, PMEF has added 10 new scholarships over the past year to be awarded to Penn Manor High School seniors, who are now eligible for nearly 70 different awards totaling more than $95,000.

Here are the new scholarships:

Manor Township Agricultural Study and Political Science Scholarships
These two $1,000 scholarships are sponsored by Manor Township, and priority will be given to students who live in the township. The agricultural study scholarship is for a student majoring in the field of agriculture, with priority given to those studying agriculture or agronomy studies, agribusiness, bio-renewables, or animal, plant, earth or mineral science.  The political science scholarship is for an individual furthering his/her/their education in the field of political science, including majors in political science studies, international politics, politics and government or public policy.

James D. Harne Memorial Scholarship
This $500 scholarship will be awarded in memory of Jim Harne, a 1963 Penn Manor graduate who was a varsity wrestler and theater student known for his sense of humor. The award is sponsored by a classmate, Don McCann, and his family. Seniors planning to major in English, library science or a related field are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students known for their sense of humor and willingness to take creative risks.

Star Rocks Farms Foundation Scholarship
The Barley family established this $1,500 scholarship for a student pursuing a career in agriculture or life sciences. Selection will be based on leadership qualities in the community, church, school and agriculture fields.

William ‘Bill’ Fisher Memorial Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship was established by family, friends, co-workers and the Steinman Charitable Fund to honor Bill Fisher, a longtime sports editor and sports writer for the Lancaster Sunday News. The scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a career in journalism.

Nick & Marnice Charles Scholarship
This $650 scholarship is funded by 2013 Penn Manor graduate Nick Charles and his wife, Marnice. Nick was grateful for the scholarships he received at Penn Manor and wanted to provide financial support to a student who has spent four years in one of Penn Manor’s music ensemble groups. The winner will be selected by the music staff.

Lee ‘Todd’ Amigh Scholarship              
Retired Penn Manor health and physical education teacher Jim Amigh, recently funded a $14,000 scholarship in memory of his wife, Lee, to honor her commitment to environmental education. This award is for a student passionate about pursuing an education and career in environmental education. Previous coursework in environmental education and volunteer service related to the environment will be considered.

Tony Purcell Sr. Memorial Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship honors Tony Purcell Sr., a 1975 Penn Manor graduate who passed away in 2021. Tony participated in multiple varsity sports and was inducted into Penn Manor Athletic Wall of Honor in 2001. He worked as an industrial electrician at Armstrong World Industries for over 40 years. This award goes to a student attending a technical or trade school or completing an apprenticeship in a technical field.

Doan Family Scholarship
This $500 award was established by the Harry Doan family on behalf of Harry, his late wife, Betty, and their two sons, Kurt and Jamie. Harry and Betty were longtime Penn Manor educators and administrators. Harry taught English and was a middle school principal. Betty was an art teacher and elementary school principal. This award is intended for students entering a trade or two-year college with an emphasis on learning a useful skill.

Warren V. Lefever Memorial Scholarship
This $1,000 award honors Warren Lefever, a member of the Penn Manor Class of 1942 who left school to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his service, he obtained a GED, attended Stevens Trade School, and worked at RCA. This award goes to a CTC student who has demonstrated good character, as well as talent, motivation and commitment to his/her/their chosen field.
