More than 80 retired Penn Manor employees rekindled old friendships May 9 at the 13th annual Retirees’ Breakfast, sponsored by Penn Manor Education Foundation.

This year’s breakfast presentation included a Skype with a Penn Manor graduate, Joseph Monaghan (Class of 1982), who credits his high school teachers with giving him a good foundation to succeed later in life. Joe, who was not exactly a stellar student at Penn Manor, is head of the English teaching department at Fernandina Beach High School in Florida.

He was reunited, on-screen, with one of his former teachers, John Sullivan, who attended the breakfast.

Retirees also got to meet the team of four Penn Manor freshmen who built a drone that placed first in the recent Sea, Air & Land Challenge. The boys’ project was funded with a PMEF Venture Grant.

Foundation executive director Jan Mindish shared a letter from a PMEF scholarship recipient from Nepal contrasting her life in Penn Manor with her difficult existence in a refugee camp.

And the audience was entertained by pianist Ali Murphy, a Penn Manor senior, and the Manor Singers. Penn Manor students also made many of the pastries served to retirees, along with the floral arrangements at each table.

The breakfast was a great way to acknowledge the role that Penn Manor retirees continue to play in students’ lives, Mindish said.

“Penn Manor Education Foundation appreciates the ongoing support of our retirees for PMEF’s efforts to provide additional resources to strengthen student learning,” she said. “Attendees are reminded of the difference they continue to make, even in retirement, for our students.”
