More than 200 books distributed through Literacy Outreach program
June 1, 2018More than 200 books are now in the hands of children from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, thanks to a Literacy Outreach program funded through the Strong & Healthy Families program.
On May 29 and 30, Penn Manor administrators and social workers distributed books to children of all ages in the Pheasant Ridge and Manor Heights communities to encourage the youngsters to continue reading over the summer.
The children also got to tour the Lancaster County Bookmobile, which was on site, and enjoy a free ice cream treat as part of the program, now in its second year and funded with a $1,300 Strong Grant from Penn Manor Education Foundation.
Parents accompanying the children learned about Lancaster County Library’s summer reading program and received a schedule of when the Bookmobile will visit their neighborhoods and other locations in Penn Manor.
The Literacy Outreach effort also provided a free book to every kindergarten student in Penn Manor and sponsored Bookmobile visits to Central Manor and Hambright elementary schools on May 29 and 30. Books also were donated to the Willow Run Community Center.
